STORIES OF PEOPLE WHO INSPIRE US
This page collects stories of real “flesh and blood” men and women whose courage, faith, love, and perseverance inspire us to follow in their footsteps. The stories we offer invoke an analogy to the “Faith Hall of Fame” in Hebrews chapter 11 that lists the trials and accomplishments of many biblical heroes and heroines named and unnamed.
Hebrews 11:1-2 reads, “Faith is the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen; it gives us assurance about things we cannot see. Through their faith, the people in days of old earned a good reputation” (New Living Translation)
We invite people to submit stories of heroes and heroines whoese efforts for justice in Appalchia can inspire us. These can be biographical or anecdotal.
And may God grant each of us the faith in which our own stories, told or untold, will usher in waves of justice and peace upon God’s good creation.

Judy Bonds (1952-2011) was a “Mother” to the mountains, that is, the movement to value and protect the mountain lands and inhabitants that God wondrously created. Judy’s unflinching courage, resolute determination, and passioned commitment coupled with her cheerful, optimistic, loving heart, inspired many to take up the cause of justice in Appalachia.

Larry Gibson (1946-2012) inspired countless thousands of people to be “keepers of the mountains.” A man of humble beginnings, Gibson’s exceptional courage, boldness, and constant messaging on the abuses of mountaintop removal give those who knew him renewed resolve to continue his vision.
